Hire a Caterham from £150 a day including comprehensive insurance.
The Caterham weighs in at just over 500kg, less than half the weight of a Mini. So you can't expect a living room on wheels.
They are narrow and at 6ft, 14st (90kg metric fans) I'm snug but not uncomfy in the Supersport. The SV will take 6'5" and 16st easily. I reckon you'd struggle over 15st if you weigh that much at less than 5ft 10".
Strangely enough, headroom is unlikley to be an issue as the car has a racing roll bar which is a tad higher to allow for a race helmet.
At the other end of the scale, less than 5ft 2" and we'll need to sort you out with a cushion! In the SV that's about 5'7".
Give us a call if you're concerned and just before we take cover, we'll tactfully point out that your bum might look big in a Caterham :)
The bottom line (no pun intended) is that we'd like you to be comfortable and safe. You are paying a deposit on booking, so if in doubt, please do call.
We are insured through Highway Insurance and they stipulate conditions of hire that are not negotiable. Breach these conditions for any reason and you're not insured and that's seriously bad news for you. We're really sorry if that excludes some guests for now.
1) The Insured shall verify the identity and permanent address of the Hirer and any other permitted driver by means other than relying solely on the information contained in the Hirer’s or driver’s driving licence and that such person is not amongst the excluded persons enumerated below.
THIS MEANS THAT WE'LL NEED BOTH BITS OF YOUR DRIVING LICENSE AND SOME OTHER FORM OF ADDRESS/PHOTO ID - eg council tax bill/bank statement etc
2) The Insured Vehicle shall not be let out on hire to or be driven by: -
a) Hirers under 25 or over 70 years of age.
b) Hirers aged 25 or over unless a full driving licence valid in the United Kingdom has been held for 5 years. Ask if less.
c) Persons who have been convicted of an offence in connection with the driving of a motor vehicle or motorcycle and/or have had their driving licence endorsed or suspended or have more than 6 penalty points imposed. Not more than two speeding offences in the past 3 years. “Spent” convictions, covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 may be disregarded.
e) Persons who have had their insurance declined and/or renewal refused and/or special insurance terms imposed as a result of claims experience and/or have had their insurance or cover cancelled by any Motor Insurer.
f) Persons engaged wholly or partly in professional entertainment or professional sports persons.
g) Jockeys and persons connected with racing of any sort.
i) Persons who, whilst driving, have been involved in more than one accident during the past 3 years. Again, ask if this is you.
j) Foreign Service Personnel other than persons born in the United Kingdom.
3) The insured vehicle shall be driven only by the Hirer or other permitted driver who has completed and signed a Hirer’s Proposal Form immediately prior to any hiring.
“...I’ve always assumed that a car like this would feel like an extension of your hands and feet, but it’s the other way round. I felt like a part of it, an organic component but a component nevertheless.”
